In terms of variety of cask ales available it's hard to beat Sheffield. There are several excellent free houses and a number of small breweries that mean that not only choice but also price is excellent. And what is better is that Sheffield's Supertram system runs right thought the main area that these pubs are located, meaning that a day ticket at a cost of 2.20, covers all our transport needs.
Starting at Sheffield railway station, make your way to the tram stop and catch a blue route tram, to Malin Bridge, from the platform next to the railway station. Alight at Shalesmore tram stop. Continue in the direction of the tram for about 75 yards to reach :-

The Wellington is an unassuming street corner pub. There are two rooms, both smoking and non-smoking off a central bar area, with a small sun trap beer garden located at the rear of the pub. When it comes to beer the choice comes from up to nine constantly changing guest ales. The pub opens 5:00pm to 11pm Mondays, 12pm to 3pm and 5:00pm to 11pm Tuesdays to Thursday, 12pm to 11pm Friday and Saturday and 12pm to 3.30pm and 7pm to 10:30pm Sunday
Turn right on leaving the pub and cross the busy dual carriageway by means of the pedestrian crossing to the left. Go down the ramp at the end turning right at the bottom, before taking the first left. Follow this road for a quarter of a mile and on a left hand corner, seen on the road going straight on is :-

The Kelham Island Tavern is a multi-award winning pub. A small side-street single roomed pub when reopened, now has a large extension behind it, a sure sign of it's success. A range of upto seven constantly changing guest ales are available along with Acorn Barnsley Bitter and Pictish Brewers Gold which are always available. The pub opens 3pm to 11pm on Mondays, 12pm to 11pm on Tuesday to Saturday and 12pm to 3pm and 7pm to 10:30 pm Sunday.
A long walk this, right out the pub and first right will, about 20 seconds later bring you to :-

The Fat Cat is another multi-award winning pub and the home of Kelham Island brewery, which is located just past the pub. Yet another multi-roomed un-touched pub with a pleasant beer garden to the rear, The Fat Cat has won many awards for it's food, which has a bias towards vegetarian and vegan diets. The pub is one of the few to have been mentioned in Hansard, the parliamentary diary. The bar provides a choice of beers from Kelham Island, Timothy Taylor Landlord and up to half a dozen guests. A decent selection of continental offerings are also available. The pub opens 12pm to 3pm and 5:30pm to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 12pm to 11pm Friday and Saturday and 12pm to 3pm and 7pm to 10pm Sunday.
Turn left on leaving the pub and head towards the busy dual carriageway. Here we need to cross the road and the river and head down the road diagonally opposite us. Immediately you will find :-

Not currently open, the Gardeners Rest is closed following flood damage.
Despite being very close to Stones Brewery, this pub was never owned by them but by John Smith and in later years Mansfield. However in 1998 the pub has become yet another successful free house. The pub has one main room with a very small snug to the left and has recently gained a large light extension leading to a small garden which backs onto the river. The range of beers includes a number of Timothy Taylor, Sheffield and Wentworth beers and four guest beers, of which two are served using gravity dispense. The pub opens 12pm to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 12pm to 10:30pm on Sunday.
Turn left out the pub and follow the road around to the traffic lights. Cross the dual carriageway and head up the small flight of step and up the hill turning right at the top to :-

The Hillsborough Hotel is a home to Crown Brewery. A modern hotel with three main rooms and a conservatory with great views over the valley, a number of bed and breakfast rooms are also available. Not surprisingly the range of beers includes Crown beers and a number of guest beers. Note that the real ale bar is only open 6:00pm to 11:00pm Monday to Wednesday, 4:30pm to 11:00pm Thursday to Saturday and 4:30pm to 10:30pm Sunday.
Turn left from the pub and follwo the road downhill until you get to the road before Tescos. Turn right up here (Albert Terrace Road) and on the first street corner you will find :-
Seven pubs should be enough, so retrace your steps back to the trams stop and catch a blue tram back to the station.
