Founded by 1830, they were originally based at the Victoria Brewery, Hyde Street. Moved to Ardwick Brewery in 1852. Merged with Threlfall's in 1961 and the brewery was demolished in 1966. Taken over by Whitbread in 1967. Production of Chesters beers were transferred around the Whitbread breweries until they were eventually subcontracted to Burtonwood and Everards until production of the brand ceased in 1999.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
