History

Brewing commenced in March 1988 at the old schoolhouse in Sandwick. A 10 barrel brewplant was initially used but this was replaced with a 25 barrel plant when the brewery was modernised in 1995. Merged with Atlas in June 2004 to become part of Highlands & Islands Breweries Ltd, although brewing for the two breweries remains separated. Following the failure of Highlands & Islands, the company was brought by Sinclair Breweries Ltd.

Beers Brewed

We do not maintain a list of beers brewed by each brewery. There may be a list on the brewery's own website and we suggest you also visit the entry for Orkney Brewery on the independent www.beermad.org.uk.

Footnote - Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries. The links we provide cover both possibilities; Ceremonial Counties which are the areas for which a Lord-Lieutenant has been appointed; and Historic Counties (and their allied county boroughs) which represent the position before the 1974 re-organisation.
