History

Brewing started in 1830, the brewery moving to the Thistle Brewery in 1870. Announced in June 1999 that they plan to quit brewing to concentrate on running their pubs. The brewery closed in August 1999 and Maclay Inns Ltd was set up to run the pubs. The brewing staff started a new brewery in Alloa under the name of Forth Brewery brewing Maclay beers. Maclay beer was then being brewed by Clockwork which was part of the chain of Maclay pubs, for a period. Thistle brewery has since been demolished.

Beers Brewed

We do not maintain a list of beers brewed by each brewery. There may be a list on the brewery's own website. For historical information, we suggest you also visit the brewery page on the unfortunately no longer updated Beermad.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries. The links we provide cover all areas possibilities: Ceremonial Counties which are the counties for which a Lord-Lieutenant has been appointed, Historic Counties (and their allied county boroughs) which represent the position before the 1974 re-organisation and Local Authority which represents the third tear District level.
