Originally known as the Cheltenham Original Brewery when registered in 1888, following a number of takeovers and mergers by 1958 they were known by their final name. They were taken over by Whitbread in 1963 and became the Flowers Brewery.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
