History
Real ales were mainly sold using the Buchanan's brand name. Stopped brewing real ale in Autumn 1999, the cask beers were brewed by Frederic Robinson Ltd. The brewery was sold to Scottish Courage Limited in 2004 and became known as Dunston Brewery.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
