History

Opened in 1856 as William McEwan & Co, this brewery merged with Youngers in 1931 to form Scottish Brewers Ltd. This in turn in 1960 merged with Newcastle Breweries to form Scottish & Newcastle. Now under the ownership of Scottish Courage, this plant now only brews keg beers mainly for the Scottish market. The brewery closed at the end of 2004.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries. The links we provide cover all possibilities: Ceremonial Counties which are the areas for which a Lord-Lieutenant has been appointed, Historic Counties (and their allied county boroughs) which represent the position before the 1974 re-organisation and Local Authority which represents the third tear District level.
