History

Originally opened in 1865 by George Lorimer it was acquired by Vaux in 1946. Following closure threats it was purchased by a management buy-out team in May 1987. During the 1990 two fires severely damaged the brewery but in both cases a full restoration of this fine Victorian brewery was completed. The brewery was taken over by Scottish Courage during 2004 however the Caledonian brands are still owned by the management of the original company. Took over Harviestoun in January 2006. the brewery was completely taken over by S&N, formerly Scottish Courage, in April 2008.

Footnote - Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries. The links we provide cover both possibilities; Ceremonial Counties which are the areas for which a Lord-Lieutenant has been appointed; and Historic Counties (and their allied county boroughs) which represent the position before the 1974 re-organisation.
